TRACK(S) OF THE DAY // WOODIE WILCO! (1998-2012)

In una sala prove di Chicago si incontrano il reverendo del folk di protesta inglese, Billy Bragg, e Jeff Tweedy e i suoi Wilco. Siamo alla fine degli anni Novanta: meno tre al Duemila, per la precisione. Compito: registrare delle canzoni i cui testi sono stati scritti da Woodie Guthrie ma mai incisi. Il progetto è fortemente voluto dalla figlia di Woodie, Nora, sorella di Arlo Guthrie, folk singer come papà.

Vedono la luce, così, due dischi. O meglio due volumi di un’unica opera: Mermaid Avenue, dal nome della strada di New York in cui Woodie aveva vissuto dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Trenta brani attualissimi e potenti, che ci raccontano storie di variegata umanità, sogni, utopie e tante, tante, tante idee politiche. Che sono quelle di cui si sente maggiormente la mancanza, oggi.
